How Clinical Studio Pilates Can Benefit Arthritis?

3.9 million Australians have arthritis. That's 1 in 6 people!

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis or damage to the cartilage within the joint capsule.

What is cartilage?

Think of it as a shock absorber for the body. When it is damaged it results in more load going between the bone on bone within the joint capsule. This then causes the arthritis pain and reduced movement. Eventually can lead to restriction of daily activities and movement.

Benefits of Pilates For Arthritis:

Physical activity is scientifically proven as the Gold Standard to reduce arthritic pain. Movement helps the joint stay nourished. Think of it like a rusty tap - the less you move it the tighter and stiffer it gets! The more you use the tap and move it the easier and more movement comes.

We also know that exercise improves mood, lessens depression and improves quality of life! The Australian Health standard is at least 150minutes of moderate intensity physically activity each week for adults with arthritis. This can be broken up into smaller sections to make it achievable throughout the week.

It is important to choose the right kind of exercise and under the right guidance to not make your arthritis and symptoms worse. Look for low impact exercise that works on maintaining the range of motion for the joints as well and strengthening and stretching.

For the reasons above Pilates is a great choice especially Clinical Pilates as you are under the guidance of Physiotherapy and/or the highest level of Pilates instructors!
